Vase of Roses

What started as a simple after school wading party turned into a triple tragedy here Friday as three local youngsters were drowned in a stock pond at the west edge of town.
The victims were James Willard Broomfield, 11, and his sister, Lindell Lou, 9, and a neighbor, Teresa Sue Howell, 9. The brother and sister were children of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Henry Broomfield and the other victim was the daughter of Leslie Howell and Mrs. William Hickman.
The drownings occured about 4 p.m. Friday but the bodies were not recovered for about an hour. The tragedy took place at the pond on a farm owned by Clyde Taylor and within a quarter of a mile of the youngsters homes.
First word of the drownings came when a four-year-old ( six year old ) who had been among those at the pool ( pond ) came to the home of Mrs. Guy Emery and reported it. Mrs. Emery rushed to the pond where she found the Howell girl floating on the water.
She waded in, brought the girl to the shore and administered artificial respiration. The girl was taken to the hospital here but was reported dead on arrival.
The bodies of the Broomfield children were recovered about a half hour later by Gene Allen and Sam Smith from about five feet of water near the center of the pool ( pond ). A physician placed the time of death between 4 and 4:30 p.m.
The fire department had been called to the scene with prospects of pumping the pond dry to recover the bodies. They were found before this was necessary.
Services for the Howell girl were held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Westside Baptist Mission with Rev. Thurman Braughton, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the 100F cemetary under direction of Coffey Funeral Home.
In addition to her father, mother and step-father, she is survived by a brother, Leslie Lee Howell, of the home here. She was born at Gilmer, Texas, December 23, 1956.
Rites for Broomfield youngsters were conducted at the same church at 2:30 p.m. Monday with Rev. Braughton also officiating at this service. Burial was in the City cemetery under direction of Sanford Funeral home.
James Willard was born August 1, 1954, at Idabel but had lived here since he was less than a year old. His sister was born August 30, 1956, at Antlers.
Both youngsters attended the Westside Baptist Mission.
Survivors include their parents, a half-brother, Larry Gene Cochran, Pauls Valley, and a sister, Bessie, of the home.
Pallbearers were Hershall Bates, Joe Satterfield, Roger Satterfield and Dock Taylor.
